The key to avoiding a tailing loop is to make sure that the rod tip travels in a straight line. For a rod tip straight line, we necessarily must bend the rod. That bend is dictated by our carry (line outside the tip) and the force we use by moving the rod. We start from a standstill and accelerate smoothly to an abrupt stop. I can’t emphasize enough the importance of being smooth.  

Tip travels in a straight line.                                         Smooth application of power.       

Here (below) the application of force isn’t smooth, and the rod tip path is not straight…                

             

In a nutshell – too slow at first and then too fast.
